A Guide To Buying Ductless Fume Hoods
Ductless fume hoods, also known as carbon-filtered enclosures or filtered fume hoods are equipments that help to remove the hazardous fumes, vapors and particles from the laboratory. Installation costs are low and there is no need of ductwork when it comes to these fume hoods.
Here are some points to consider:
1. Ductless fume hoods are available in different classes but some of them
still limit the applications that can be performed in them. Some of the Erlab ductless fume hoods should only
be used for light-duty. The other filtered fume hoods can be used for various
chemicals. However, you must remember that larger chemical volumes always
shorten the life of the filter. This simply indicates that only a limited
number of different chemicals should be used. The hoods should not be exposed
to any kind of extreme heating. Modest chemical volumes should be used and
moderate chemical exposure times should be maintained.
2. Ductless hoods are outfitted with chemical specific filters. These
specific filter types increase the chemical trapping capacity for different
chemical families. Some of them cannot be safely filtered or in fact, are not
filtered effectively enough to allow the ductless hoods to be a financially
viable option. On the other hand, filtered fume hoods can filter out bases,
acids and solvents with only one filter type. However, there are still some
chemicals that will not be effectively filtered.
3 When you choose a ductless fume hood, you will not have the added cost
of ductwork installation and wiring which is needed in standard fume hoods.
However, you will still need to replace your filters so do consider how often
you will need to do that and the maintenance costs that will come along with
it. Note that the filter life span ranges from a few months up to two years.
4. If you have concluded that a ductless fume hood is the best option for you, the last thing is for you to determine how the advantages of the ductless fume hood stand against the disadvantages. This is very important as it will serve as the last deciding factor for your choice.
